Course Description

Geography is an extremely broad and contextual discipline. Unfortunately, is it often reduced to the memorization of basic facts, such as the names of state capitals or identifying physical features for map quizzes. While these kinds of basic geographic facts do serve as the foundation for geographic understanding, they are only the beginning of geographic analysis. Where? is the first question of geography, not the last, and this course introduces students to the higher-level geographic questions that must be asked in order to obtain a holistic and comprehensive understanding of place. This course provides the foundational exposure to geography as an academic discipline that every student—including specialists in technical fields such as geospatial analysis— needs in order to situate themselves within the context of geographic study and to understand the relationships between place, subject matter, and analytical methodology. This course also situates geography in the context of other academic disciplines so that students not only know where they fit within geography, but also within the entire body of human knowledge. none Over 11 lectures and 1.5 hours of content! In this course you will learn the main analytical questions asked in geography, how geography subdivides itself, and where geography fits within the broader context of human knowledge. Any student who is beginning study in any branch of geography, whether regional, thematic, or technical
